My First Crush: Shaun Cassidy Back On Stage After 39 Years and Reaching Out to Those Who Are Hurting

Interview by Billy Shore

Wednesday, February 10, 2021

“How can I help? That was the question I kept asking myself,” says former teen idol and television writer and producer Shaun Cassidy. He joins Billy Shore to talk about COVID-19 and his support for No Kid Hungry and the Santa Ynez community through his new ‘My First Crush’ wine label. “COVID came along and I saw a lot of our friends… farmers, growers and winemakers suddenly really hurting. Then I saw our schools close. I saw our restaurants close and I knew a lot of people were going to be in trouble,” explains Cassidy. My First Crush donates $2 to No Kid Hungry for every bottle sold. “I thought, here’s an opportunity to not only help the folks I live with, but to help all of these kids,” he says.

Cassidy’s early life in the spotlight shaped his views on community. “None of us are all that unique… My story is your story is the story of the people who I see in the audience. Our journeys have different details, but this shared experience can be bonding,” he reflects. “There is more in this experience that can ultimately bind us together and help us through it together.”

Join us for this inspirational and deeply personal conversation with a steadfast No Kid Hungry supporter who makes great impact in his community.

Shaun Cassidy

Shaun Cassidy is an American singer, actor, writer and producer. He has written and/or produced a number of critically acclaimed television series over the last two decades including "American Gothic" (produced with Sam Raimi), "Roar" (starring a then unknown Heath Ledger), "Cold Case," "Cover Me," "The Agency," “Invasion,” and “Emerald City.” Cassidy wrote and executive produced "Hysteria" for Amazon and is currently serving as executive producer and writer for “New Amsterdam" on NBC. Cassidy grew up in Los Angeles and New York City. While still in high school, he signed a recording contract with Warner Brothers. This led to three million-selling albums and a handful of top ten hits. Almost concurrently, Shaun starred on the ABC television series "The Hardy Boys Mysteries." While working on Broadway, Shaun wrote his first pilot, "American Gothic." When the show debuted on CBS, The New York Times called it "The most original new show of the season." After this, Cassidy permanently transitioned behind the camera as a writer and showrunner. He is currently collaborating with award-winning winemaker Steve Clifton to produce My First Crush wines in support of No Kid Hungry.

My First Crush

My First Crush wines are proud to partner with No Kid Hungry, a national campaign ending childhood hunger in America. In the wake of the coronavirus, millions of children and their families in the U.S. are facing poverty and hunger. Before the pandemic, 1 in 7 kids were struggling with hunger. Today, it could be 1 in 4. The good news is No Kid Hungry has a plan to make sure those children are fed, both during this crisis and in the recovery to follow.

Through a combination of emergency grants, strategic assistance, advocacy and awareness, No Kid Hungry is helping kids, families and communities get the resources they need, but there’s still more work to do, and we all can play a part in ending child hunger.
