Senator Jeanne Shaheen on National Leadership and Local Solutions

How can national and local leadership work together on solutions to our country’s biggest problems? Recorded in front of a live audience at the Music Hall Loft in Portsmouth, NH, Billy Shore welcomes Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Black Trumpet chef and owner Evan Mallett and Dondero Elementary School principal Kate Callahan for a lively discussion that considers issues from both national and local perspectives. Outspoken about the nation’s opioid crisis, Shaheen is leading efforts to get resources to local communities. “We’re not going to jail our way out of this epidemic – we’ve got to help people get the treatment they need to be successful,” she explains. Callahan sees first-hand the effects of the crisis on kids. “Housing has become more transient because of the opioid crisis. [Some students] come from a homeless shelter,” she says. Mallett helped start a job fair for people with addiction-based criminal records. “The idea is to introduce restaurants and farmers to candidates who need a second chance, and to hopefully restore their dignity through employment,” he says.

Known for bringing civility and sophistication to public affairs, Shaheen is troubled by today’s political climate. “We have to be able to listen to each other and figure out how we can compromise and work together. We’ve got to make sure that our leaders are as good as our people in this country,” she stresses. Mallett believes one of his roles as a chef is to help facilitate civil discourse. “I feel like food is the ultimate democratizer and the ultimate way to have people sit down and have a conversation. Delivering the food and witnessing that exchange is a truly meaningful part of what I do,” he says.

Jeanne Shaheen

(D-NH) is the senior United States Senator from New Hampshire. She is the first woman in U.S. history to be elected both a Governor and a United States Senator. She has served in the United States Senate since 2009 and is a member of the Senate Committees on Armed Services, Foreign Relations, Appropriations, and Small Business and Entrepreneurship. Shaheen served as Governor of New Hampshire from 1997 to 2003. During her time in the statehouse, she helped create nearly 67,000 new jobs while keeping New Hampshire’s tax burden the lowest in the country. Between her time as Governor and election to the U.S. Senate, Shaheen served as the Director of Harvard University’s Institute of Politics at the Kennedy School of Government.

Evan Mallett

Owner and chef at Black Trumpet Bistro and Wine Bar in Portsmouth, NH. He began cooking at Lindbergh’s Crossing in Portsmouth and, after a stint in Mexico, returned to head the kitchen there. In 2007, Mallett bought the historic building and opened Black Trumpet Bistro. Mallett’s connection to local food sources and his love of Latin and Mediterranean cuisines continues to inspire, through his fusion of ethnic influences with New England cuisine. In 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2017, he was named a James Beard semi-finalist for Best Chef, Northeast. In 2016, Mallett published his first cookbook, “Black Trumpet: A Chef’s Journey Through Eight New England Seasons.” He is actively involved and sits on the boards of Chef’s Collaborative, Slow Food Seacoast, and the Heirloom Harvest Project, an initiative to join farmers, chefs and educators to identify and restore a food system native to the greater NH Seacoast.

Katherine Callahan

The principal at Mary C. Dondero Elementary School in Portsmouth, NH. Prior to that, she was education program director at Hill View Montessori Charter Public School. Callahan earned a BS in communication disorders and family studies from the University of New Hampshire and a M.Ed from Endicott College. She is passionate advocate and champion for No Kid Hungry.
