Two Harvard Grads Follow their Passion

James Beard Award-winner Joanne Chang of (Myers + Chang; Flour Bakery) and Alan Khazei (City Year; Be the Change) were both Harvard graduates who abandoned the careers for which their studies trained them to follow their passion. Joanne Chang

Graduated from Harvard College with a degree in Economics and Applied Mathematics but soon left her job as a business consultant to become an entry-level kitchen worker. Since that time, she has won multiple James Beard Awards for her cooking and baking skills.

Alan Khazei

Graduated from both Harvard College and Harvard Law School before detouring from a legal career to found the non-profit City Year, which served as the model for the Americorps Program. Alan currently serves as the Founder and CEO of Be The Change, Inc., a movement building organization which creates bipartisan national campaigns to affect public policy and culture by organizing coalitions of nonprofits, social entrepreneurs, policymakers, private sector leaders, academics, and citizens.
